Greg Gubler, Gentleman Samurai and Internationalist: The Life and Trials of Ambassador Naotake Sato (1882-1971) Rowan & Littlefield, Lexington Imprint (2021), 476 pages with index and extensive bibliography.  Available in hardback, paperback and e-book through Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, and through most bookstores.

Diplomats often play a behind-the-scenes role in the historical account that is dominated by dictators and military figures.  Nevertheless, they represent and defend their countries on the world stage and are involved in far-reaching decisions that are often glossed over.  The earnest diplomats of Imperial Japan (1868-1945) and their efforts at conciliatory diplomacy and conflict resolution in difficult circumstances became increasingly eclipsed by the grandiose dreams of expansionist nationalists and militants.

about the author

Greg Gubler

I am Greg Gubler, presently living in Limerick, Pennsylvania, and married to my lovely wife, Betty Raymond Gubler, an inspired author and amazing teacher, who has a website of her own featuring her research on Native Americans and her historical novels and collections of stories and thoughts.  I am fortunate to have met this special soul from Maine and to have had her support for over 57 years.

My progenitors were Swiss German and Danish ancestors who immigrated to America about the time of the Civil War and were sent to settle in the arid climate of southern Utah.  They pioneered several small towns and prospered by their initiative and hard work.  My father, named William Tell for his Swiss heritage, loved the Boy Scout movement from an early age and achieved his dream of becoming a Boy Scout executive in 1943 after struggles during the depression and working in Las Vegas in wartime base construction.

What’s Inside the book?

Gentleman Samurai
and Internationalist

The story of Ambassador Naotake Sato (1882-1971) occurs during this turbulent era.  He spent most of his career in Europe, at the crossroads of Japanese diplomacy and was involved with the League of Nations and from the onset in Tsarist Russia.  His long career ends in Communist Russia as he is presented with a declaration of war after trying to save and promote closer relations with the USSR.  Certainly, he was regarded as Japan’s most regarded Russian expert and was stung by Soviet opportunism and disregard for their Neutrality Pact.  Being able to translate his memoirs and biography was an eye-opener and a glance into the Japanese perspective.  Sato’s integrity and forthrightness are a sharp conrast to what one encounters in most autobiographies.  Fortunately, I was able to search through the microfilm of the intercepted diplomatic cables of World War II to see an even more complete story.

Book Insights

The main focus of this site is to introduce my biography of Japanese Ambassador Naotake Sato (1882-1971), who, as a converted internationalist and moderate, tried to stem the tide as the militarists pushed Imperial Japan into confrontation after confrontation.  He played a major role in the end-game at the end of World War II.  As the beleaguered Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1942-45), he was trying to maintain the fragile Neutrality Pact.
